wow....... [headinwall] i feel the pain of that one fillipo . sheesh what ya gonna do ?

that sounds like a wood problem more than a screw up though . was it a bad set of back material? weak spot? or was it faulty bracing ? enquiring minds wanna know .

Dang, Filippo!
That's not a doofus thing,
that just downright sucks!
It would have probably happened later, so...
What ya going to do with that?
I'm using less fancy looking wood,
that is quarter-sawn,
because I think it be more stable.
Now you gotta worry if you fix it, it will happen somewhere else on that back.
[headinwall] [headinwall] [headinwall] gaah gaah gaah
My scratch is getting smaller and smaller.
We aren't even halfway into the month,

Shooting coat six of lacquer on the back of a curly macassar ebony classical guitar which needs to be delivered mid December, the Sun warmed up the back and I listened to the back cave and crack in a matter of moments. Split the wood, separated the seam and split the joining strip inside. You could see daylight through. This was a one of a kind back and side set - I don't think I've ever seen curly Macassar Ebony before.

Ouch! Just curious, but does your centerseam reinforcement's grain run in line with the back, or did it still separate even with a cross grain strip trying to hold it together?

On the bright side, at least the wood showed its ugly side while it's still in your possession so you can glue it back together.

There's a cool trick in the Somogyi books for brittle woods (although it's too late to do it on this one). Glue thin, full width cross grain veneer strips half way between each of the back braces as extra crack stoppers. Might have a tiny effect on sound, but so do the repaired cracks.

Was not a wood problem guys. User Error. Late morning about 55 degrees out but sunny. I put the guitar out for spray and shot coats with 15 minute intervals. On the 3rd and final pass, the back cracked. It actually inverted the back dome, between the braces. Center strip was irrelevant ... the wood was coming apart.

The User Error was leaving the guitar with the back facing the morning sun. While cool out, it probably heated the back to 100+ degrees (it's black) - add to that the amplifying IR effect with lacquer - and it just heated and pushed the moisture out of that back.

Lesson: bring the guitar in between coats ... which is what I normally do.

I have repaired the back and will send photos later today. You can not see the damage under finish.

Filippo

Ok makes more sense to me as why you called it a doofus move . i am glad to hear you could repair it though . ummmmmmmm we have d some doozies this month and its not half over . I may not post sandra again ! laughing6-hehe

I had the chance to buy a huge board of that stuff a few years ago but passed on it. Sorry about the Filippo...I understand the pain.

That's impressive, Filippo. Can you say more about the repair? How did you draw the crack back tight after wicking in the CA?

Well ... took another pass at it. We think the first CA repair did not get CA sufficiently in the crack wood was swelled too tight, possibly. So this was a glue up at 45%RH, scraped and a coat of Zpoxy. We'll see what it looks like after 24 hours in the shop. I'm hoping this sufficiently locks up. I was able to see the CA soak through the other side, which is a good sign.

My humble entry...

I was mindlessly shaping a bridge on the spindle sander yesterday when I went a little too far. The bridge flew out of my hand and went flying across the shop, bouncing off the wall and hitting the concrete floor with a nice, loud, resonant "plink". The sound was so nice it brought a smile to my face -until I noticed the 60 grit rash on the inside of my wrist.

I'm a guy, the things I say around my friends are really inappropriate, but this is a public forum where everyone should feel welcome and it should be the kind of environment where people of any age and gender can visit and be inspired to pursue guitar building. I don't understand that some people have the poor sense to post things that make it seem like its some sort of boys club. In the right environment a lot of things can be funny but have some respect for others who may be using this forum for more than just their own personal entertainment.

Point taken , and maybe i went to far , I guess that might be the diffrence .

I humbly apologize to anyone I may have offended in my " poor sense " and my own " personal entertainment " !

That isnt what this was about , but im not here to offend anyone . By talking about our doofus moments we many times get help and suggestions that make the diffrence in a fix and or a scrap. Fillipo's post are a prime example of that . Marcus Post was another .

So while we endeavor to move on from here , lets keep in mnd that things will be posted at times we might not agree with . MOST have the courtesy to pm a person and ask questions and or make a statement privately . I personally find it offensive that I was refered to in such hatefull terms in open forum . " not by jeb98 btw" But I guess , that doesnt matter .

Hi Wud,

I appreciate your response to my posts. I think jeb98 said it better than I.

I'm sorry to have offended you by my comments. It didn't occur to me to send you a PM rather than post on the forum. The content I found offensive was posted in public on the forum and others were responding in kind. So I felt my comments should be public. It's a public issue, in my opinion, not limited to only those two posts by you.

I value your redress. If you would like to discuss any of this via PM please contact me.

Thanks,

Vivian

i spent all last evening and this morning taking advantage of the mild weather to put the final shellac and nitrocellulose laquer on my cigar box ukelele. granted, it is a crude project but i still put a huge amount of time in to it.
anyway, i just put the last coat on, and hung it from a wire in the warm green house. and when i turned my back, one end of the wire pulled out, and it came crashing down to the ground (cypress mulch) with wet laquer on it. didn't break, but looks like i'm going to have to find the near-impossible rattle can shellac and rattle can nitrocellulose laquer, and spend many hours redoing it. So far I have done no guitar building but instead remodeled my little one room shop. OMG what have I gotten myself into? So I made a new work bench and started building it up when I realized that one of the four legs was an inch shorter than the others. Doh! No biggie though.

I think you are selling yourself short. You left three legs too long - thats three times worse, I think. laughing6-hehe

I put a rosette into a cedar top with CA (because I was in a rush and didn't want to go get the TiteBond from in the house) and it seems the channel wasnt fully sealed and the CA soaked into the end grain. The rosette was a pieced together job I made from some very spalted maple. Hopefully I can salvage the rosette, but I think the top is a goner. Here is a pic of the rosette on the top, I had not routed the channel yet in this pic. Also, a piece fell off the end of the rosette and I had vacuumed it up, but I found it and reattached it. Then broke it off again while trying to plane the rosette flush to the top. I went to bed after that. Too many disasters in one night for me.

Well FML! I was planing the sides after glueing them to the blocks and also to the top of my adi/sapele O-14 fret . Well I accidentally dropped it while moving it, no big deal, right? So I go to pick it up and a clamp falls on the top and completely destroys the guitar. Time to start over: this is going in the fireplace! I'm a little pissed to say the least.

I DID a nice one while routing binding slots, thinking I'd get it close to the cutaway area, or actually not thinking at all at that point (the darn router was so loud), I managed to rout a slot on the fretboard edge, grinding away metal fret ends along with some nice blood wood binding already there. wow7-eyes ... Since repaired, but so much for installing all frets before glue down...
