I am contemplating a bit of a build challenge for the first Quarter of 2012 here at the OLF.

Basics would be :

( 1 ) Any Stringed Instrument you wish to build
( 2 ) $150.00 Maximum Cost ( Complete , all hardware , TOTAL Cost ) ( Wood lying around has " Some Value " and should be counted )
( 3 ) Must be done before April 1st 2012
( 4 ) Must be out of Wood that is indeginous to your area " within reason" IE No Imported Materials .
( 5 ) Must be participating Member of OLF ( Come on Lurkers time to jump in )
( 6 ) Must provide Pics of final product and clip of the sound for judging
( 7 ) Must throw your hat in the ring as a contestant Prior to the Building , so we have a good idea of the number of people involved
.
I will put up a $100.00 Worth of Bandsaw Blades Through my Store for the Winner .

Any Interest ?

Also I need 3-4 Of the better builders here to offer to be Judges at the end .

NOTE: If a 1st Time poster , " Lurker " Wins It will be an additional $25.00 to the prize .

EDIT:

Everything " less the Truss Rod " could be replaced later with higher quality hardware if the builder chooses . I would count Laq.

I would not count sandpaper , tape , glue etc:

I do agree with the Cities Materials not being used.

As for the community voting I have no issue with that at all if thats what people would like to do .

I dont want to lose the FUN part of this with to many rules and restrictions .

The whole point of this is to have a little fun and be creative.

I am game. Now just to clarify, we are talking $150 including tuners, truss rod.... essentially all parts from start to finish right? This should be interesting. If we have wood laying around, can we count that as free? I hope others jump on board here.

I would say no imports versus requirement to use local woods. While us Left and Right coast folks will do just fine for top wood, it might be tough on some mid-western and south western builders. Not sure if 1 Apr is a realistic target for some folks that might participate, but have to deal with an active build/repair schedule. Also think that this becomes a beauty contest if there is no sound clip requirements, so I would think about at least a YouTube vid requirement and a higher grade sound clip to round it out.

I am ok with the No Import Stuff . and yes a good clip of the sound. As for the Laq etc: I dont wanna get nuts about every penny Just a fair honest effort .

Todd , would you be willing to be a Judge on this ?

Well, my next commission is an Italian Spruce / Cocobolo guitar -- if I painted the back red on the "challenge" guitar , the customer might never notice :o

Wud,
I love it, I never jumped in on the MIMF challenges but enjoyed the threads. To expand on the idea, it would be fun to have something of a scholarship or donation involved.

Duane Caulkins in Sacremento has a program called "Woodshop Rocks", he has built 3000 guitars and 800 ukuleles with his middle school students, his electric kits cost the students about $150. He generously will host wood shop teachers from around the country to visit and learn his methods of building with young students. I am fortunate to have an invite for tomorrow.

How ever it can work, it would be fun to take a $25 entry fee from participants and donate that to a student who cannot afford the materials. The student would need to submit an essay, work pictures from his wood shop class and a recommendation of a teacher or adult who will work with them. Perhaps a participant would donate an instrument for raffle or something.

The school where I work in this poor community, does not permit parents to pay for materials like this, that way one student cannot be building a guitar while the kid next to him gets stuck making Popsicle stick bird houses. My solution is to have the students make and sell small projects to locals. I plan on building and raffling some instruments to assist my program, more for the school to get some tools then for student materials.

Any way, I love the idea, it is fun and builds community, but I would love it more if we can give back to some communities and get some kids involved in our passion.
Rob

Although the timeline for the challenge doesn't work for me, I just cut a B&S set of quarter sawn red oak, total cost $11.84. Add a "character" grade WRC top at $3.25, and a cherry or walnut neck made from leftovers and spruce bracing from a Home Depot 2x6, I think it would leave lots of room for tuners and truss rod. I'm sure there are going to be lots of entries under $75! This should be fun. [:Y:]

OK, call me trigger-happy....

Here's the first entry: http://www.anzlf.com/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=3842

If I'd tried to sell the wood it was made from, I would not have got more than $10, if that. The tuners and strings cost ~$60. I make my own truss rods, material ~$2, carbon fibre maybe $5, finishing materials ~$30. Glue etc. ~$10. Nut, saddle, bridge pins, ~$10. Fret wire, $8. It also has a K&K in it, which at about $120 probably disqualifies it...

Still trying to find time to get the sound sample/YouTube vid up....

While interesting, I couldn't complete a guitar in that time frame. However, I would enjoy seeing everyone else's builds!

Several people have made that same comment , I know we have some very talented builders here . But I would like to suggest that maybe we are " Overthinking" this a bit.

I am not Suggesting a $3,000.00 job on a guitar , I am suggesting that we do the best we can in short order for a $150.00 . win lose or draw when its done we have a $150.00 guitar . Call it a shop guitar if you will . Its about " Creativity" and having fun !

So, is it a beauty contest, or a sound contest?
That makes a HUGE difference.
Or is it a combo deal?
Looks great, sounds okay.
Looks like poop, but sounds great.
Which wins?

Does it have to be a guitar or can it be something else? I've been thinking about a ukulele and I think I might have enough time on spring break for one.....I live in Nebraska so would I be allowed to use spruce? I've got some mulberry that would make nice back and sides but there isnt a decent top wood around here.

I was wondering if there have been other challenges before, so I can look at posts from participants.
This would be very exciting to look at.

This Idea has been going on for a while at MIMF and they have produced some nice looking and sounding instruments and they have a $100.00 limit

I am proposing a limit $ 50.00 higher and all i am suggesting is a " decent looking and decent sounding " instrument

Are the guys at MIMF better than we are hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm ???

I Make the point again " Creative " and Have Fun !!!!

Dont OVERTHINK this , its for fun and creativity and MAYBE we can coax a lurker or two out to give it a run !
