It should be very glossy as-is, but it will polish right up with the same compounds as you would use for your finishes. Start with your finest; it might be all it needs.

I thought it would be glossy as well , but it has the Orange peel look of a freshly sprayed guitar and thats what I was wondering about.

WudWerkr: Not sure if you know but Grumpy is the producer of that product. I saw your post and was going to suggest you talk to him but Mario beat me to it.

Hmmm, it should most definitely not have an orange-peel look to it.

What can happen, and has happened, is that the material will take-on the texture of a rougher surface that was placed over it, even for a short while. So perhaps it was sent along with some other goods, or was simply sitting on a slightly rough shelf or other surface.

But how it attained the texture is not important, because if you warm it up to where it becomes quite limp(a 5 or 10 second dip in hot tap water will do) then allow it to cool on a very smooth, flat surface, such as a piece of glass or mirror, or even some smooth MDF, it will return to its original "wet" look. If you've already installed it, or have applied the adhesive, don't worry, you can sand it level(I use 1500 followed by 2000 grit(CAMI, not the P rated abrasives) then buff it out with the same compounds you use for the guitar's finish. It will even come up to a great gloss when polished by hand using liquid compounds.

Hope this helps!

Thanks , I havent installed it yet so I may try that . It shines , but when you held it at an angle you could see that "orange peel" look . Again , first time user so new to me . I like the material it looks good and will look great on the guitar . Thanks again for the advice ! [:Y:]

Mario - in the case of Wud, I think he needed to start with rubbing compound. Eventually he would have worked his way through the protective peel layer, and then he could have moved to finer compounds laughing6-hehe.

If there's a protective peel layer, it is NOT Tortoloid. I personally make, and package, each and every one of them, and there is no such layer.

Counterfeit?

Possibly , there is a protective layer I peeled it off . Maybe I should buy from you directly in the future then . I did purchase this from stew mac and its the blank that you cut your own pickguard . Soooooo since its my first dealing with this stuff , you tell me ? I do know that under the layer of plastic it is very shiney and smooth .

Could Stewmac be adding the layer for protection ?

I installed a (real) Tortoloid guard last week. It's really nice. Thanks to you, and Stew-Mac for offering us a nice product.

I used Tortaloid (from Mario) and it looks great! I get a lot of complements on it.
