Now that Joe White is out of commission for a while, who else out there does Poly finishes??

I know Tony does and have an email out to him...

I am in the process of setting up to take in finish work. Mainly lacquers and French polish, buy I could do Polly as well. Won't be ready to take anything in for a few Weeks yet but I may be able to help you out. Let me know if you are interested.

FWIW, I do my own finishes, and have no actual experience with any outside finisher. I used to take in an occasional finish job, but no longer have time, so I only do my own.

I can give a strong endorsement of Tony Ferguson (fergusonguitars@sbcglobal.net). He has done two finishes for me. One was a white lacquer mandolin and the second (very recently) was a urethane finish on my first guitar. Both jobs were outstanding and I'll be sending more work to him in the future.

Tony Ferguson did a bunch of guitars for me a few years ago. Great guy and does an amazing job. I switched to Joe White because Tony did not offer a poly finish at the time. Not sure he does now but his finish is second to none.
I have been in conversations with Scott Sailors and seems like he know what he's doing.I'll send him a neck and a guitar pretty soon. Between the two you should be covered.

What's a good price for a finish?

I was going to ask about finishing guitars from Canada, but.....

1) I suppose the inclusion of shell on a guitar dramatically increases the paperwork for getting it across the border
2) The import taxes coming back are based on the value of the package, which would be the guitar value, so I'd pay 13% plus the handing fees. (Not worth undervaluing it if it is damaged or lost!)
3) The guitar is in a big ol' box with lots of foam padding, so i'd be looking at close to $90 shipping each way. (Sending anything by dogsled just isn't economical anymore)

I think i just talked myself out of it......

Laurie .. you only hit a few of the setbacks to cross border finishing if the guitar has shell on it ...

First, to get it into the US, you will need a USFW permit to do so .. 100 bucks a year, plus a 93 or so inspection fee for every guitar you ship. You cant just use any old shipper either .. it has to cross at a designated port, with USFW inspection. For the std USFW license, there are NO border crossings available by land - ie, ground transport. They are almost all water ports, one exception is Memphis, which happens ot be the Fedex hub. Thats the only one I use when shipping into the US (I tried ground once thru Buffalo .. no go, need the USFW permit exception, another 100 bucks , and no guarantee I would get one). Once its there, you are fine for a bit .. but .. with shell it also requires paperwork and a license to get it out of the US legally as well .... and another inspection fee charged ..

This adds 200 Cdn to the cost ... assuming the finsihier is willing to do all the paperwork and licencing (maybe you could also use your license (assuming you get one) to ship back out .. no sure about that one.

Your not to far away from us...I use Larry Sweeney, in Morrisville, Vt. He shoots the poly on all of Froggy Bottom guitars, and many of us feel he is the best. Full time guitar finisher...that's all he does, and he takes in the odd small builder from time to time. Nice honest guy.
