Ha...good good for you, Danny! Err, I mean good for your friend! ;) Using wood of an origin other than a luthier supply to build with does add a bit of intrigue IMO. [:Y:]

I used to hang out here quite a bit a while back and even though I am still building guitars, I seem to have taken a turn somewhere. Here is what is growin in my shop, actually it's outside right now but soon as it's upright in the next couple of weeks, It'll come inside the barn.
Sorry about the drift in content, but there is more to life than guitars, maybe....

Looks nice, John. As many here know, guitar and boats go together well in my shop!

Hey Todd, nice size 2. Do you have any close-ups of your joint at the junction of the binding and end graft? I've always found it difficult to get that really clean looking with light colored binding.

Please excuse the gloat, but my wife was not impressed.

I went to my wood boutique & picked up some 8/4 Cocobolo. Not the most exciting grain but very straight & minimal runout for Cocobolo, IMO. Plan to slice it up this week.

These are 8-1/4" wide.

flooding! lots of it! gaah i´ll have to clean up the shop, dry it, try to save the freaking tools that go rusty with everything that´s not the sahara, assess if the wood did not get too wet, build a new solera, try to savage a gobar deck... well, all good fun! you guys please go on with that annoying guitar-building part of lutherie, i´ll stick with a shovel and a mop!

Here is the top joint...probably helps that the figure is fairly strong. On figure maple, I like the look of a boxed end more than mitered purfs, due to the figure direction change.

Nice joints Todd. I always felt that T'ing the purfling at the end graft looked like a guy was too lazy to miter it or forgot to put his little riser for the binding routing jig in place (as I just did last week) but that actually looks pretty darn good. Nice job!

Here's the guitar I posted earlier in this thread ... with French Polish, strings ... and the pickguard that ate New York city. Sort of a cow-punk Roy-Rogers-abducted-by-aliens design aesthetic. Lots of fun to mess with retro design elements!

Thanks again for the encouraging words guys. That binding is just the "rope" binding from LMI.

Strung this one up last week, glued down the FB extension on Friday. Small body, big sound, loud but full and clear, name Opus. This is the first one I've built that was what "I" wanted to build. I worked on the shape over the last two years, starting with an L-00. 12-fret, 24.9 scale, cocobolo/Lutz, Waverlys, double-X top, x-braced back. Brushed Behlen's Rockhard Tabletop Varnish, which sadly is no more.

Wow David and Pat! Both really beautiful instruments. New workshop has the electrical all run, the double door hung, and tomorrow the insulation is sprayed. Monday the mini split HVAC system goes in. Should have tools in by Thanksgiving.

Finally got my new Mac ebony telecaster up and twanging. Next up, a similar guitar: a Euro spruce/padauk Hauser copy :)

That is beautiful. I love it. I only question the Fender logo on the back...

The next few weeks will be busy . I have 4 conversions in the shop. All 60's era D 28's that will be converted to 1937 era specs. 2 D 28'a and one a D45. Another is to be a 12 strings 42 . This is unique. All the purflings and rosettes will be to pre war period. I will post a link to the documentation of the work.

Ha, credit where credit is due... I think the Telecaster is easily one of the greatest guitar designs of all time. Whenever I make one I am happy to put a few dollars in their coffers for the privilege so I always use all Fender hardware.

Please do... I've got a 60's D-35 in the shop that has seen better days and I'm not quite sure what to do with it yet.
