thanks for the link! i shared it with a bunch of people. i for one think there is way too much prissy-ness going on in the world of acoustic instrument building, and elitism that keeps way too many people excluded from experiencing playing music; this was very refreshing

Creativity knows no bounds--at least it doesn't know many of them. Frankly, I don't know who gets the first tip of my hat: The kids who learn to play on these instruments, their instructor, or the people who actually build these instruments. They have all accomplished something pretty great. Anything that furthers a kid's interest in music deserves a lot of respect.

Very heart-warming.
It would be such a joy to send these kids to music school and to provide them with fine instruments.
My uncle refurbishes fiddles and gives them to kids with the promise that the kids will learn to play them.

Cold water: Why are all the stringed instruments made out of tin cans and duct tape, while the trumpets and clarinets are modern, factory instruments?

I'm all for this project, or any project, that helps musical kids make music. I'm skeptical about this video.

Flutes, clarinets, and trumpets can be made out of pvc pipe, and sea weed. Real guitars, violins, and cellos, can be made from pallet wood, firewood, even cardboard.

This looks like a dramatic pitch.

I'm all for the kids. I'm all for the music. I'm suspicious of the video.

most probable answer: maybe the woodwinds and brass were recently donated, after the scavenged-string thing gained media momentum? also, they are virtually indestructable, compared to stringed instruments. i could easily imagine how to build a cello/viola/banjo/guitar, but a trumpet or clarinet? forget about it, you'd basically need a machine shop and fluting anvils, not to mention a source of thin sheet metal. there are reasons why the bedouin, mongols, and gypsies mostly invented and played instruments similar to violins, and not brass/woodwinds: because it was the most feasible instrument to make, out of nothing.

Eric, thanks for those videos, too. Notice there were only a few factory made instruments, and the flute and clarinet are in poor condition. I'd guess the standard instruments were found in the landfill or donated. Certainly, flutes and such can be made out of found objects, but that doesn't mean the luthiers there know how to do that or have tried (yet). Maybe they could use some help with plans. Or possibly, the stringed instruments are in more demand with the kids in that community, so the luthiers focus on those.
