Do you use this software for its spectral analyser?

I've used it primarily to manipulate recordings, slow tracks down while maintaining pitch, editing and so on but I've been trying to use it for spectral analysis too. I think it will work once I learn how to set it up properly.

How does this new Audacity compare to a slightly older Adobe Audition(I have 3.0, I think...)? I don't use it for tap tuning(I have ears...), but for some recording, and especially for converting vinyl LP's to mp3.

I love Audacity. I use it to record in stereo my band rehearsals and as a multi track recorder. Very simple to use and I am sure there is a lot more to it then what I use it for.

thanks! my version is due for an upgrade. i use it mostly to convert chop up long radio passages that i have recorded, and to squash .wavs down to MP3

The spectral analysis I've been trying to do is following the Gore/Gillet method for plate thinning based on frequency analysis for their falcate bracing. It's been a great learning experience. I also tap plates and listen with my ears hoping that with more experience that will be a valuable tool too.

I only use it for recording and evaluating tap frequencies, one thing I have noted that a couple hertz change in the FFT display of any peaks will not really sound different to my ears. I save files on all my guitars so I can go back and compare what I measured to what I hear, it is a great learning experience.

Mario I think for what you are doing Audition is probably what you should continue to use as it was developed as a professional sound manipulation program and you have figured out how to use it. I have it and tried a 30 day trial on the newest Audition and they both are great though the cost of the newer one is quite high. For what I do Audacity is easier and works well, the free factor is also big for me.

Learning what to hear and how to hear it isn't always intuitive, and these programs and the things that many of you are learning to do should be a great help. I mean, hearing 'something' is one thing, but now you can put a "picture" of what you're hearing in front of your eyes, too. Pretty cool, methinks. Kind of an artificially-induced synesthesia...

Don't ignore your fingers, too. I sometimes will have a piece of wood "jump out" at me just from handling it for a second. Something about the way it feels is telling me "something". What that "something" is, I'm not sure of yet, but it happens often enough that I pay attention...

I was curious as to how clean it recorded, because I read of the "improvements" in this latest version, and wondered if it might be cleaner than my version of Audition, which is becoming dated.... I'm all about free stuff! Just pressed for time, as always, and I wondered if anyone had compared the two programs directly in a "a/b" test.

Heck, Grumpy, I'm still using Audition 1.5 and it still works fine! I got is some years ago when they offered it as an upgrade to Cool Edit from Syntrillium for $99. At the time I was interested in mastering a CD, which I finally did. However, I still use it for normalizing sound clips to get the volume up, and for cleaning up little issues when needed. It has some great transient removing capabilities.

Audacity is a bit better for tap analysis, I believe, but you can do it with Audition too - it's just more complicated, and requires a bit more set-up.

All that said, I, like you, prefer to feel, bend and tap as I work a piece of wood. When I record taps, it's mostly, just to see what I ended up with after all that scratching and tapping and such.
