Well, I picked a winner for this guitar. He lost everything in the storm, including 4 guitars. His house has been condemned by the city and scheduled for demolition. I had no idea about the house when I picked him, but I learned about it after. Anyway, a reporter from CBS radio called me one day and asked to do a story about the giveaway, so here is a link to that:
http://newyork.cbslocal.com/2013/01/28/stories-from-main-street-s-i-sandy-victim-getting-new-custom-guitar-from-brooklyn-man/

You can listen to the story as it aired, and continue to airs today, and hear comments from the winner and me, link is in the middle of the page.
Andrew picked a really nice set of ziricote for this build, here is a pic of the wood:

I will post pics as the work progresses.
Thanks for looking,

Tony

That is an awesome thing to do, Tony. That Zircote is stunning! Your last build thread is legendary, so lets see how many pages we can get to on this one :)

I was wondering when we might see this thin take shape. I'm very glad to see you will be sharing it with us. It's a great thing you are doing. I have to say if my house blew away I Honestly believe my guitars would be one of the first things on my mind (after family of course).

I'm going to assume that you have given the winner the link to this thread to follow along. With that in mind, I will try to keep my usual shenanigans out of it. This is a good thing you are doing Tony!

I'll refrain from punching this one. Thanks everyone.
Bryan, no link yet but I will give it to him eventually.
A regional manager from D'addario heard the story on the radio and contacted me today. He's going to send a bunch of accessories to the guy as well. Pretty cool of him to do that.

I've been saying it for years. Finally someone else has agreed with me!
It really does feel good to do nice things for others. I thought my face would melt or something, but it has not.

I got some work done....
Blocks being glued:

Cutting the side profile for the wedge:

Making the rosette:

I used the cut offs from the back and sides, pieces of a tree blown down by Hurricane Sandy, and some spalted maple to round it out. It turned out OK in my opinion.

Thanks for looking!

Awesome thread Tony, only wish I had the chops to give away a guitar, still learning how to complete them and great rosette. Question about how you did it. The first pic looks like it's on wax paper of sorts? Then it's sitting on some plywood for routing. Curious how is it held in place for the routing?

Casey,
Perhaps in my single days...

Larry,
I glue up the tiles on wax paper. I added a black purfling line between each tile to keep it interesting. Once the rosette is ready to be cut, I put double stick tape on the back, run it through the drum sander to clean it up, then route it into a circle. Sometimes I need to reapply the double stick tape, but usually it makes it from drum sander to router with no issues. Then I use a piece of fishing line to separate it from the backer board. Drag the line under the rosette and off it pops. A safety razor blade removes the remaining tape. And, Presto! Rosette ring in one piece. And there was much rejoicing.
