I've only used mahogany for my acoustic neck builds. Does maple work well for acoustics? How about cherry (sorry for the same question in two different posts...)? ...or walnut? ...and why do they work well?

I have used both cherry and walnut for necks and they turned out great. I laminated them with two strips of maple. Walnut/maple/walnut/maple/walnut. I will continue to use them on my walnut and cherry back and sided OMs. Pals, Vic.

Taylor makes a few models with maple necks.
They still sound like Taylors.
Archtops are made with maple necks.
So are some Jumbo model Gibsons.
I would imagine maple neck acoustics are no problem.

I hope they're ok for acoustics! :shock: :D I just used one in a build. I made a wenge back and sides with Engelmann top and curly maple neck. I'm just about to start sanding and buffing. What I do know is that the curly maple is drop dead gorgeous under the lacquer.

Maple is fine but a little on the heavy side. Maple is also a lot more work to carve compared to Mahogany. I have also done Walnut and sherry necks which work fine as well. But my favorite is still nice Honduran Mahogany.

as much as i love maple i don't think it is the best choice, sonically, for acoustics...just doesn't resonate a whole lot. and as far as cellos/violas/violins/doubl basses, the neck on those comprises a much smaller portion of the instrument, so it doesn't govern tone as much as the neck on a guitar does, which is comparatively very long and very wide. close to half the fretboard on a bowed instrument doesn't even have a neck, it just flies out over the body, unsupported

Every maple necked acoustic I have played always felt neck heavy to me. Didn't care to much for the tone neither. Love it for electrics though.....Mike

I guess its all how you build it. I used to own this Greven Nick Lucas ... was not neck heavy, and sounded wonderful.
