This one isn't that much to look at perhaps, but boy does it ring when you bonk it... Pernambuco. Looking forward to building with it, I've only used it once before, but that one turned out so well, I wish I had plenty. Alas, pernambuco of this size and quality seems to be about as rare as it gets, so I don't expect to see any more once this one is gone. Back in the day, one of its main uses, apart from violin etc. bows, was for fabric dye, imagine that!

You can still get it as wood chips for dyeing, commonly known as Brazilwood chips. I use the stuff for dyeing veneers to obtain an Orange and for use in Spirit Varnishes to tint them. So don't throw away the shavings or the waste!

Arnt, I'd love to build with that set!

Here's some old brown wood I'm saving. Got sides, but no pic.

Don't know if this is my favourite or not--that may be the Bubinga--but I'm keen to build with this Mango.

I'm pretty sure it is BRW and Peter offered the sister set for sale here a while back for $2000 or so.

Yep, its BRW indeed. But its not the one offered for $2000. This stuff is a "little" more expensive....
I got 2 sets just like it. All 4 piece backs but with grain like that who would care?

Arnt, you have nice taste in wood my friend! I have a very close sister set to yours, as well as several other sets of Pernambuco. I've had two guitars built with it, sold a few sets, and still have 7 nicely quartered sets along with 5 neck blanks left. I absolutely love the stuff! I believe one of the sets I sold was the set shown below that very closely resembles yours, but I'd have to look through my wood pile to confirm that. If I did sell it, I know it went to a builder in Oklahoma per the buyer's request. Are you sure the pic you posted is of your exact set of Pernie?

Here are a couple pics of the sister set that is very similar to yours...

This is one of the 7 sets I still have in my stash

Here are my two Pernambuco guitars. A OO built by Howard Klepper and an OMish cutaway built by Bruce Sexauer

Hi Brad, it appears you are correct, my set is either an "identical twin" set, or indeed the same one, that is in your picture. I'll have to check the set I have again, to see if I got the one in the pictures, but I'm pretty sure it is. Small world! You have seven of these?!! Keep me in mind if you decide to have another guitar or two built with one of them, OK? ;)

Here's the dread I made with the one set I had before, it went to a customer who also ordered a BRW dread at the same time (my biggest invoice to date  ). This set was quite colorful, so it also got a sunburst that matched those colors on the top, for total package that was quite different from your standard dread in many ways.

Hey Ernie,
I bought these sets off of Lance and Brock a few years back.
I love those pernambuco sets. I have several braz rose sets too, some if the old growth straight grain stuff, not stump wood. Ernie, you have any pernambuco sets left?

One more for the favorites stack. Snagged this off ebay a few days ago bliss
...I really need to sell off some of the non-favorites. At the rate I'm building, I may never make it through all of 'em, and I keep running across beauties like this that I can't resist.

Don't worry about it Dennis- tonewoods outperform stocks in this economy!!!

Chakte Viga, aka Mexican Pernambuco, can have a similar appearance to real Pernambuco (Caesalpinia echinata), and can make a great guitar. However, the two species are really not that similar to each other, and should not be compared to one another visually or tonally. Below are a few pictures of Pernambuco (Caesalpinia echinata) neck blanks that I have on hand along with the 7 back/sides sets I have remaining of the original 12 I acquired several years back. This is truly a very special wood, and has an absolutely unreal tap tone and reverby quality to it that easily surpasses any other tonewood including BRW. It will never come close to BRW in popularity, mainly because it rarely grows in sizes large enough for guitar sets, and the overall supply of this wood is extremely scarce in today's market. There is a test to determine whether or not your Pernambuco is the real deal. Place a single drop of liquid dish soap onto the wood and rub it together with a small amount of water onto your test piece. Then take a clean white cloth or papertowel and blot the area that has the soap and water. The paper towel will have a blush red color to it if the wood is in fact Pernambuco. Works every time, and is the process that old violin makers have been using for centuries.
