LOL! Bob, I thought I was the only one who used the weight of my surface plate as a clamping aid. Gravity is a great thing, eh?

It's a lot more convenient than my old tactic of running over to the aluminum stock pile and playing Jenga.

I bought one of the grizzly's a few years ago. Man is it heavy! I had to go to the freight station to pick it up, could not send it ups. I think the shipping was more than the granite. I was taught to use it even to true up your "straight edges" you pay a fortune for. I wouldn't get anything smaller than the grizzly. Many of the thing I use it for require something larger than the woodcraft granite. Make sure you have a friend to help you move it.

I just use some one foot square stone tiles that were left over from various tile jobs. I checked them for flatness and most were very good. A lot lighter than a machinests surface plate.

I wonder if anyone makes a 3 by 3 by 30. Surfaced on two sides!

I went to the granite and marble show room a couple years back and went thru their dumpster. I got a real pile and use them for all kinds of stuff.
