Last time me do a refret on a Padauk board...especially one with CA glued frets. pfft

Way too much grain tare out. Ain't worth the hassle...no it ain't.

In fact thats it. Other than servicing my own builds, me gonna start sending repairs to the new loofer kid in town. Got enough of my own demons to deal with, don't need the nightmares. gaah

Yeah, not a big fan of ca in the slots.
Water based is ok cause you can heat it up and they'll slip out alright....

i usually use watered down titebond 1, but have heard that wicking CA into frets can improve the sound.

Todd - What do you mean "bed in"? Do you drop the hide glue into the slot? If so, how do you do that without making a mess?

Sorry to hear you may be losing business Padma.
Did you try heat? I have heard that a really hot soldering iron helps -http://www.classicalguitardelcamp.com/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=58460&start=15 Dominelli or something like that talks about it.
Be good to know if it didn't work for you.

Flood fret slot with glue...rub into slot to avoid air bubbles...wipe excess off across fret with warm, wet paper towel...seat fret...wipe any squeeze out off with warm, damp paper towel. Sounds busy, but it takes a few seconds...i apply hide to 4-5 frets at a time, wipe, seat frets, and wipe again...cleanup is much faster than with Titebond, fish, etc., and no risk of toasting finish with CA.

Thanks. Great idea.

I just use the Franklin hide glue from the hardware store. It also dries glassy and I can put it in a syringe with an 18G needle and lay it in the fret slot. You could probably do the syringe thing with HHG. Just toss the syringe in the water bath between uses with the cap on the needle.

You know you did it right when you see glue squeeze out each side when seating the fret.

Filling the slot with something so there is no empty space under the fret is a good thing!

Can you not release CA with heat when it is used to install frets? Even if one doesn't use CA for their fret work, it would be nice to know how to approach frets glued with CA for repair work.

I do it all the time.

A flat chisel tip soldering iron transfers the most heat the fastest. Loosens right up no problem.

Agreed, same experience here.
You'll notice a *puff* of CA vapors coming off, trying to sting your eyes or even shorten your life.
Take care-- but it does work.

Me don't know him yet...but the pickers in town and the dudes in the music store tell me him real good.

The old fiddle fixer quit about 10 years ago leaving me and Doug Thompson. Doug don't build no more and me...me won't fix em no more. That only leaves one other loofer in the entire basin. Means non of them are hungry. bliss

Guns fine for acoustics, but they can degauss magnets on electric guitars, strats especially. At least, that's what I hear. An iron's easier to control as it's smaller and lighter as well.

From the Seymour Duncan site:

"397. Do magnets lose strength?
It is a proven fact that magnets can lose strength over time and outside elements such as:
Outside electrical fields: Soldering guns should never be used to work on your guitar electronics or pickup modifications as the coil has a strong electro-magnetic field that can degauss the magnet within your pickups.
Being in contact with other magnetic fields: I’ve always hated seeing displays in stores where the pickups are piled on top of each other as the pickups can interfere with the ones above or below. Never store pickups next to each other as a stronger pickup with a ceramic magnet can degauss or realign the domains in magnets from other pickups.
Hitting magnets: Never tap magnets with metal objects as the shock can realign the domains again in the magnet. Hitting or dropping magnets can change the magnetic domains within the magnets.
Heating magnets: Never grind magnets as the high temperature can affect the magnetic domains in the magnet. Also the grindings can bond to other parts of the pickups and cause later problems."

This is what I use as well, but with just the regular tip I use for soldering. Works great; using a small end nipper with the ends ground flat there's almost never any tear out.
