I have a certified calibrated digital Hygroset that agrees with my Caliber3 is why I know those dial hygros Hesh talked about are inaccurate. I would rather have one that is accurate than use a sharpie.

So again, anyone can direct me to an innexpensive sling that is accurate?

You just need one decent thermometer. Pull air across the bulb with a vacuum cleaner, done dry and then wet. Record both readings. That's really all a sling psychrometer is.

I did some testing on the one I recently bought and it pretty much matches up with Hesh's findings. In the image below the psycrometer measured 50% RH so it's only 'off' by about 5% maybe a bit more but I tested it inside the shop and outside and it was consistently off. I think for 8 bucks it's something good to have around if you just test it every few months or so.

First I do like these relatively inexpensive analog devices because I can calibrate then to my wet/dry bulb http://www.amazon.com/Reed-WD-5-Wet-Dry ... hygrometer .

Second is that the 2 I received read on the high side. However, I like to have hygrometers scattered through out the house. These do seem to work well once calibrated, easy to read at a distance, and do not need to have the batteries replaced every year are so ;-)

Thanks Hesh,

Finally got home to find my one had arrived, but was reading 65% RH when it was actually about 40%.
Take apart, needle off. put back on at 40%, add a dab of superglue, done.

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.
