Two torrefied AA red spruce tops went for $56 on eBay today. The seller is looking to see what kind of interest there is.

Wow that really did darken it. Can you explain the process? I thought it was just putting the tops in a regular old oven, how do you reduce the O2? And why do you reduce O2? What is the science behind this? Too many questions? :D

The torrifaction process is not as simply as turning on your kitchen oven, then plopping a piece of wood into it.

Yamaha was one of the early builders who used torrified top wood. They call it, Acoustic Resonance Enhancement. (A.R.E.)

Basically the wood is put into an autoclave. The oxygen (air, really) is vacuumed out and is replaced with high-temperature, high-pressure steam. The high temp and pressure literally, melt the innards of the wood cells and converts it a liquid.

Then, the wood is cooled and the air pressure is lowered gradually to prevent thermal shock. (read: cracking/splitting)

Once the wood has cooled completely, it is removed from the autoclave. Now the treated wood is stiffer and will not absorb moisture. Because it's stiffer, it is more resonant.

If you want the technical details about the process, see Yamaha's http://www.google.com/patents/US6667429.

From: http://www.yamaha.com/about_yamaha/research/are/.

Quote:
Typically, wood is made up of fibrous cellulose and resinous lignin as well as a substance known as hemicellulose that binds these together. Old wood, in which the cellulose has crystallized, hardens in the direction of the grain. On the other hand, the amount of hemicellulose decreases, thus making it easier to remove across the grain. As it becomes harder in the direction of the grain, wood becomes softer across the grain. Materials that have properties that vary depending on direction are said to display anisotropy, which in the case of wood progressively improves sound as anisotropy increases. In other words, wood has strong characteristics, responding well when an instrument is played, extending the low range, and rapidly decaying the high range. Emphasizing the qualities displayed by matured wood resulted in the development of A.R.E.

For the A.R.E. treatment, wood is first placed in a cylindrical metal pressure vessel, the internal temperature and humidity of which is controlled as the treatment process is carried out; the pressure is changed in stages. This enables the treatment process to be undertaken in a surprisingly short time if compared with the time needed to age wood.

Of particular necessity during the treatment process is the precise control of temperature, humidity, and atmospheric pressure, as well as setting the optimal amount of treatment. The result of experience and expertise spanning many years, the optimal value settings combine the “sweet sound” of a musical instrument and durability, the wood being treated during a precisely controlled process.

Would you have a link to the ebay page selling these? I tried searching for them, but came up empty.

I'd like to find the vendor selling these so I can try a set.

Here you go: http://www.ebay.com/itm/LUTHIER-TONEWOOD-LOT-2-TORREFIED-ADIRONDACK-RED-SPRUCE-OO-GUITAR-TOPS-AA-/181601107086?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2047675.l2557&nma=true&si=DnuXm6%252Ft7D8s5gE7ATw1Cg0Wt3c%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc

I talked to the seller yesterday morning on the phone. Nice guy. He's in Boothbay Harbor, Maine. I was curious how he was doing the treatment. He sent the wood out and the method used sounds very much like the one described in the Acoustic Guitar magazine article in September. I was interested but the sets that were listed in the auction were a little too narrow for my needs.

Thanks for links, guys.

This particular lot is a little too narrow for top wood, but I'll contact him to see if he has a line on torrified wood of sufficient size.

Were you able to buy torrified top wood? If so, can you share where you got it? I would like to build something with it to see how it compares to a non-torrified guitar.

I bought a piece of torrefied curly maple a few months ago that I thought might work well for a few fretboards and some bindings. I really liked the dark brown color with the curl. I haven't tried to do anything with it but may try to work it this weekend to see how it does.
