I know vegetarian guys who make nuts and saddles from corian and like materials. You can order samples for 1$ each and get quite a few from a sample. Sometimes it's nice to have a black nut and saddle. I would say they are about the density and hardness of Ivory maybe a little more dense. Someone suggested mammoth ivory. Problem with that it is banned for sale in New York. So you could not legally sell your instrument into New York or I believe resell it in New York. The logic of the New York ban escapes me but then so do a lot of things.

Corian is a good material for nuts and saddles and I know of at least one school that uses Corian for the students to make nuts out of.... over and over and over again..... The over and over and over again is because of the belief in some schools, that I agree with by the way, that one has to make about 100 nuts before they really develop the eye for it, get the fit perfect, and really understand how to cut nut slots without leaving a lot of player value on the table and in the nut.

Corian is also a good replacement for ivory and the availability in colors is a plus too - good stuff and as you said super cheap for what we do.

If you want a cheap source of Corian, call a local counter top supplier/installer, and ask him to set aside some scraps for you. If you explain what you need them for, and ask nicely, you'll likely have more than you can ever use.
