I want to make a custom truss rod cover for my electric build . Do any of you guys do any chrome plating , or has anyone ever tried the DIY kits that are available ?

On an Internet search, I found a motorcycle parts plater that can do small parts for $15 to $40. It was in California. See if you can search for one near you.

Thus far the cheapest has been $85.00 Minimum wow7-eyes
