I have a customer that would like some shell rings around my regular wooden rosette to match the fretboard inlays I'll do on his guitar. I'd like to do all the shell in black MOP and I know that DePaule supply sells black MOP strips. However they are only straight strips. If I break the straight strips into small enough pieces will they go around a rosette and look ok? Just want to here if anyone has done this. As I'm in Canada I don't have access to any of the US shell suppliers.

The curved shell would be preferable for a more traditional look, but there typically isn't a problem using straight shell and breaking in as necessary in the channel. Snap lines are typically only noticeable on a close inspection (see Zipflex as one, fairly extreme, example).

I never saw any need for curved purfling, always used straight and just broke it as I tapped it in. It's very traditional...

Thanks for all the feedback guys. I'll probably stick with Andy DePaule as I've had good dealings with him in the past and it looks like he has everything I need.

I have thought about becoming a shell supplier here in Canada but there are already at least 4 suppliers selling all the standard shell products. Right now I'm trying to go with products that other suppliers don't carry.
