Have a look at this problem. Should I absolutely not use this? I've put a lot of work into jointing and thicknessing this set and hate to throw it away. Will it pose a problem?

I only noticed after sanded down. :(

Have you bent the sides yet? Cause if they have the same fractures, they'll probably blow.

If you have, and they work, and you really want to use the back, it will probably be OK of you fill and stabilize with ca. But you'll always see them like that.

The sides bent ok. I'd be inclined to use this if you guys don't think it'll pose structural issues.

I think you'll be fine as long as you fill really well with CA. Not much stress/tension in the back.

Those are compression failures. There's absolutely no strength across the grain where you see those little fractures... you should think of them as butt joints with no glue.

And you will put 100 times that into the total guitar. Most likely these will hold up with out catastrophic failure, but could very easily open up under string tension. If they were mine I would not use them but that's just my opinion.

I wouldn't use them.
To be honest, I would contact the supplier and discuss......

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

I'd hit both patches of fractures with thin CA to wick into the tiny gaps, then fill with epoxy for strength (warm the wood first so it will make the epoxy less viscous), and then put some kind of big inlay design over the worse crack patch to reinforce it. Perhaps something like this http://www.luthiersforum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=10101&t=45740

If glued and filled I don't think you will have any structural issues. Some people might be put off by the looks, but it won't be a bother to others. I would build a simply adorned guitar with it, rather than spending a lot of time or money on it. It will probably sound great.

If the build is for yourself you know the risk. If the build is for someone else....start over with new stock.
Personally I would not use it.

Ditto Colin --- looks like defective material to me too.

This issue was hidden until sanded? If you bought that from a reputable dealer, I'd ask for some consideration. Can't hurt to ask now, can it?

Considering the hours that goes into a build and that these will always be seen if it were me no way would I use them. Should be able to settle this with the supplier. And or find a decent back set.

Yeah, it's not really visible until you wet it. I can get a replacement set, I agree that's the right thing to do, only downside is it'll delay the build a month or so. Darn

If that came from a supplier and not a brick from the lumberyard you brought home yourself, it's worth a conversation.

Worse. Wait till you buff it out!

Hey, there are always things that be done in the meantime. Start the neck and finger board. Do the top. Rosette. See? There's your month.

I would use it as a test guitar (have not built with padauk yet) and not put any great amount of work into it. If you can get a replacement set then use the sides with it and the pictured back can be used for head plates, rosettes, wonder if you can do a scarf joint and use it for binding?

A month seems like a long wait. Where are you located? Canada maybe? If you are in sunny Southern California I might have a set of paduak I could loan you.

Fred, Not at all. I keep hearing it takes some time to get certain items to Canada. Most things in the states take a week or less.

Just kidding. Although the border does cause us some challenges.

I dunno, I'm glad we have a border that takes time to get through. Wish they were all like that. Ok, sorry. Couldn't help myself. Tis the season, no? Carrion.
