Just wanted to share the story of the incredibly figured log that we brought in recently. Back & side sets, necks, and bindings will all be available soon! Find out more at http://www.hibdonhardwood.com/blogs/news/the-fiddleback-tree

That's awesome. Is there anyway of identifying that figure in a standing tree?

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

There are several sets on your web site now labeled as fiddleback. Are these from the same log you describe above and in the link?

Not quite yet. We have taken the back and sides from these logs out of the kiln, but we're still waiting for the sets to relax in order to prevent warping. We expect these new sets will be up on website in the next week or so.
