Just a quick reminder to those in the Baltimore/Washington, DC area...the PATINA Spring Tool Sale & Auction is Saturday, March 11th. The tailgating sales across from the Activity Center begin around 6 AM, and doors open at 9 AM. In the past, the hall has opened to those paying an admission fee at 8, and free general admission at 9, but I have seen no mention of that in the current announcements. Weather forecast for Saturday is breezy with mostly sunny skies in the morning and temperature in the low 30's...I'll be bundling up for the tailgating!

From the PATINA site:

2017 PATINA Spring Tool Sale and Auction - March 11, 2017

Damascus, Maryland - The 2017 Spring Tool Sale and Auction will be held on Saturday March 11 at the Damascus Maryland Volunteer Fire Association Activity Center, located at 10211 Lewis Drive in Damascus, Maryland.

A full range of tools and other antique related items will be on display beginning at 9:00 AM Saturday, March 11, 2017.

I went, sold a bunch at the outdoor flea, and froze my butt off. They said it would be 18°, but it was 23° - bonus. Not as many people showed as usual because of the cold, especially at 5:30 AM. The interior dealers had it better.

Anyone interested in tools should go to at least one of these shows. There was a fellow who specialized in chisels and you could get the highest grade in any length or style you wanted - usually at 1/2 or less of retail. Planes? large selection of anything you want - even saw my first aluminum Stanley block plane, made in one batch in the 30's. This one was mint!

There is one near Lancaster in 2 weeks - Brown's Auction. No outdoor flea, but plenty of interior dealers.

Where you there Woodie?

Ed

Yes - I did make it! If you saw a white blur streak by at about 9:15, (long ivory down coat with fur-trimmed hood...teeth chattering), that was likely me - I missed the early morning tailgating (woke up late - that NEVER happens!). Did a turn inside, then helped one of the students find a few things outside...a bit of a snipe hunt, but I picked up a new-old-stock US-made Nicholson cabinet file, a few odds and ends (a small sized Kell guide for $15...perfect for those 2mm carving chisels!), and passed on the one set of cranked neck paring chisels in hopes of winning the set that just closed online...no luck! I did manage to get up to Frederick after that for some wood shopping at Exotic, then lunch at Frisco's and a few hours catching up in the shop. Mr. V had the find of the day - $160 for what will be two very pricey dreadnought-sized sets of Brazilian rosewood with some very lovely inky figure...he crashed the door at 8:45, so got the jump on everyone else.
