The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

I am using Behlen Nitro Instrument lacquer.

I use a sealer coat of dewaxed shellac (Zinser seal coat) then a coat of the Behlen vinyl sealer, then 8 coats of the instrument lacquer.

The first step is to prepare the back of the head by making a smooth transition between the end of the head and the neck shaft. The "trick" is to relieve the neck so that the thickness of the backstrap doesn't make a lump under the first fret where it ends.

I use a flexible cork caul (with wax paper on it) to glue it down which follows the curve.

Then when carving the neck you fair it in carefully starting with a rasp then switching to sandpaper on a 1" diameter dowel.

It's actually one of my favorite parts of making the guitar.
