I was approached by ASIA to write another article. What would you people like to hear about. I have a case of writers block and am looking for inspiration .

A tutorial on how you make your nice molds would be good. I don't think it would impact sales either.

What are the differences in making one mold verses going into production?

Someone told me that you were the source of many of the things the Martin's Luthier's connection sells. If that is true, an article on how that came about might be interesting.

John, I think an article on side bending may be good.
From the thickness, profiling and bending, heat, duration etc, for various types of wood.

A good hard look at side bending would be a good one John! Addressing issues like how to avoid cupping and breaking as well as wood preparation would be good issues to cover.

John, I think there are some good suggestions with side bending. Although I haven't had issues (yet!) I do remember how nervous I was bending my first side. That was even magnified 10 fold when bending my first cut away. You might actually make it about bending in general? I see a lot of questions on bending bindings and purflings. Details that I've personally found found value in reading about here on OLF and around would be:

Side thickness, Temperatures, moisture, cut away considerations, figured woods, wrapping (kraft paper,foil, etc), bending form materials (spring steel, st. steel, etc), Super Soft (might need to not endorse a product and call it a "bending agent" typical to use in veneers?), spring back, cupping, double sides, side bracing. That certainly looks like a LOT to cover in an article?

I think that an article similar to Hesh's recent neck setting technique would also be good. I'm certainly refining my technique after seeing it.

     I just sent in an instruction manual for ASIA to print but I do think a more detailed article will be a great idea and will do one.
     I will see that these ideas come together and will hopefully get them up in the next few issues. Rememeber that you can also send in articles.

I'll second the neck fitting idea...but the side bending idea is also excellent, especially if you include the cutaway information. Other ideas might be:

Bridge Making
Neck Making (or some variation)
Installing amplification systems in acoustics
Neck resets
Installing rosettes
Builing a Vac Press jig (always a hot topic)

As for GAL and ASIA I like and belong to both. There are more than 1 ways to do things. Both organizations have merit and both provide a service.
It is an interesting idea. You can write one Mario , I am sure they would be interested

I like the idea of an artical on not so much how to build fixtures but more on concept and design process of various fixture designers. That way you can incluid input from various fixture designers. This could be more of interspective into the thought processes that whent into the designs of the various fixture designers, rather than of a how to.

I belong to both ASIA and GAL and support both willingly. If one organization is good, two have to be better!

Personally, I really like there being two organizations. GAL is much more west coast oriented and ASIA mid west to east coast. It is so much easier for me to get to ASIA symposium. I guess for a recluse like Grumpy, getting to either is a moot point

The reason for two luthiers' organizations are steeped in a lot of turmoil, and I personally would love to see a reconciliation and merging of the GAL and ASIA. Unfortunately it will probably take the death of a generation before that can happen. Too much bad blood shed in that schism...

And John, I think you should take a good look at the Doolin-style side bender design. There's a lot to be said for being able to very precisely profile sides and then register them at the butt before bending. You just can't do that with the Fox style benders. Also, working with lights on the inside and a heating blanket on the outside really works well.
