I've been using a nice flat piece of corian with adhesive backed sandpaper to lower and finish saddle heights. I clamp a 1/8" thick piece of maple with a nice square 1/8" side over part of the sandpaper and use it as a fence to keep my saddle square. It works but the problem is that it leaves so little saddle to grasp that it is hard to hold the saddle and keep my fingers off the sandpaper (ouch!). I've been thinking about building a jig/vise to hold the saddle, but then I'll need some other fence to keep it square.

What are you guys doing to make this easy to hold, and keep nice square bottom and even sanding all along the bottom of the saddle?

I do it by hand using a marble tile with sandpaper taped to it. I use a metal
machinist's square for a fence and then I put a couple of wraps of tape on my fingers. As long as I don't get too carried away, I don't make a flesh offering to the deity of all that is abrasive.

Rework your maple fence either shorter or with the center removed to make room for your fingers. About 1 inch in the center will make enough room to hold and still leave enough fence to hold the saddle square.
