I just ordered the wrong stuff from LMI (really hate their web store) or at least purfling that I've never installed before. It's about 1/4" deep, same as the binding. I'll need more, narrower, purfling any way so I can install the bottom purfling but haven't used full height purfling before and was wondering it I even want to and what are some land mines (that I'll surely step on) to avoid.

I'm thinking for one thing if I add the bottom purfling to the binding then that combination will be taller than the binding requiring a custom channel anyway or not? Not there yet but am curious about some options.

After the main binding route,I don't like the purfling route to be more than 2/3 through the soundboard, especially if I'm doing a herringbone or somethng wider so I don't risk routing past the kerfings and separating the top from the ribs.

Rout a quarter inch channel in a piece of wood, saw up the middle of the channel with a narrow bandsaw blade and you have a zero clearance jig for slitting your wide purfling down to normal size (and you get twice the purfling for the price).

Kewl, what do you use to slit the purfling? An x-acto?

The bandsaw. 10TPI blade, 1mm kerf (if you'll live with the mixed units). Leaves you with two purfling strips ~2.7 high, which is pretty much what "standard" purfling is.

All the bloodwood purfling on this guitar was done like that. The purfling is 3 laminations to make the bending easier.
